Should you be using a Toner? - Why?

It’s an age old question we get asked in the beauty industry. ‘Do we really need a toner? You sure it’s not an unnecessary extra?’ Well I’m about to tell you something your therapist should of told you! YES! Toner is definitely necessary. Toner has some fantastic benefits that aren’t for your skin. Your toner will help your moisturiser spread more easily so you use less of your product. It can also be used as a makeup remover. Some toners come in a mist and can help cool you down in the summer heat and even help to cool sunburn! Some mist toners even set your makeup! And these are just a few non-fundamental features of your toner!

So what are the fundamental features and benefits I hear you ask? Well, toner is necessary to reset your skins PH level. Our skin should naturally sit at 5.5 which is slightly acidic on the PH scale. Our skin has a thin, protective layer on its surface, referred to as the acid mantle. This acid mantle is made up of sebum excreted from the skin's sebaceous glands, which mixes with lactic and amino acids from sweat to create the skin's PH, which ideally should be slightly acidic. When we use cleansers, masks etc. we are altering the skins acid mantle. Depending on your routine you will be cleaning with products that produce a more acidic or more alkaline PH level which is necessary for your specific targeted treatment. Your acid mantle is your protective layer of your skin and stops bacteria from entering and building up. When we alter it to treat it we have to always put it back to its correct PH level. This is where your much beloved toner comes in! Your toner will be slightly acidic or alkaline depending on what you’re targeting in your daily routine. It should be returning your PH level back to the ideal 5.5 to ensure your skin can continue to strengthen and fight the congestion monster – bacteria leaving you with flawless and healthy skin.
